Precious, Yet Neglected!

Imagine waking up one day to a hazy world. Everything around you is blurry, you can’t focus on anything and you seem to see at least two or three shadows of anything around you! You rub your eyes, but it’s still the same! You grope your way to the bathroom and splash water onto your baby blues, but it’s still the same! You begin to panic. You call out to your partner and tell them about the problem. A visit to the optician clears things out – you no longer have that 20/20 vision you took for granted!

In fact, you’re going to have to wear spectacles soon and that really does nothing for your face! Of course you always have the option of contacts but they’re messy and require high maintenance! But you have no choice! But the question is, could you have avoided this contingency altogether?

The answer is a big yes! If only you had taken care of your eyes and not taken your vision for granted, you’d have been better off! First off, wear sunglasses regularly. They might seem like a waste of hard earned money, but trust me they’re not. You may not realize it, but your eyes need protection from the harmful UV rays of the Sun, which cause permanent damage to the inner structure of the eye. In fact, exposure to sunlight is one of the prime reasons for cataracts!

Also, when you’re watching your favorite movie, don’t turn out the lights for the “movie theater” experience. It’s really not a smart thing to do as it puts unnecessary stress on the eyes, also keep your distance! Confused? I’m talking about the distance between you and the plasma screen! It should be at least six times the height of the screen! Also ensure that it is at the same level as your eyes.

Give your eyes some rest. Get adequate sleep and whenever you’re working at the computer or reading for prolonged durations, take a break every hour and shut your eyes for about five minutes. It’s going to help you concentrate better and your eyes are going to be safe as well!

Lastly, make sure your diet includes lots of Vitamin A. Carrots, which are rich sources of beta carotene are especially helpful and can do wonders for your vision. Your eyes are, after all, the “windows” of your soul, we can’t have them all barred up now can we?
