Parenting a Child with Behavioral Problems

Parents may have children with some major disabilities like autism, learning disabilities, and obsessive compulsive disorders and so on. Each of us parents does not know how to deal with their tantrums, oppositional defiant behavior, beating up their sibling and refusing to do as they are told. These kids do no listen to a single word you say and they are a cause of nightmare for the parents.

The behavioral problems of these sick children get so bad that in spite of reading various books on parenting, when the practical time comes you are unable to handle your child. You have to be selective about how and when to intervene with your child’s behavior. We must help the, guide them to make their own decisions. A common sense and a level head that is patience will help all the parents to reduce the frustration of their discipline.

You have to be consistent while making household rules and the child should learn about his or her boundaries. You have to enforce positive reinforcement like praising and rewarding the child for good behavior and also negative reinforcement like asking them to complete a task in order to get something they demand.

An older child who is showing tempers and throwing tantrums must also know the boundaries of what he can do or cannot do. A child who is showing aggressive behavior should be treated in such a way so that you can inculcate a sense of empathy in them. Make him or her understand about how other people are feeling when he or she is behaving badly.

Treat your child with empathy and respect so that he also learns to treat you with respect. Do not ever punish your child harshly and abuse them as this will lead to aggressive behavior. If your child has a problem with aggressive behavior limit your child’s viewing of TV programs and movies showing such aggressive behavior.

Honesty is the root of a character and when your child starts lying make sure that acknowledge this but then also make sure that your child faces apt consequences for misbehaving in this manner. Another common behavioral problem is sibling rivalry among your children. Either ignore them or separate them. Put them in two different rooms and do not listen to either of the two. Praise them when you can find that they are getting along well.
